One of his bereaved brothers opens the lock on the store’s iron door, above which the new sign is already in place: Imtizaz Techno, meaning “technological excellence.” Muhammad Awad’s electronics store had been set to open last Sunday. Inside, a heavy, pervasive, dispiriting quiet, the odor of fresh paint and plastic intermingle. Hanging on the walls are colorful cellular accessories, screen protectors and earphones, chargers and cases, as found in every store of its sort. Everything is poised for the opening, which was set to take place on Sunday, September 25.
